A core celebration…Annual AppleUmpkin Fest set for Oct. 17

The 12th annual Adamstown AppleUmpkin Fest is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Adamstown Community Grove, just off Route 272 and adjacent to the community pool.

The festival features craft vendors, family events, games, and contests.

“We always hope to have a fun-filled day where families can come and spend the day without spending a fortune,” said Joe Dietrich, chairman. “There is no admission or parking charge, and we have free hayrides, a costume parade, and a magic show.”

Dietrich said he had more than 40 reservations for craft stands as of the middle of September and expects more. Craftspeople will be selling Christmas and Halloween items, jewelry, knitted and crocheted items, and more.

The menu has been updated this year thanks to volunteers from Mohn’s Hill Church. Beginning at 11 a.m., they will be serving “Frankenstein Franks” with the option of 25 different toppings. The lunch menu also includes chicken corn noodle soup, homemade baked beans, and assorted beverages.

Vendors will be on the grounds all day offering homemade eggrolls and orther Oriental treats, gyros, kettle corn, and funnel cakes. Family members from Brecknock Orchards will be on hand to help fair-goers make their own caramel apples.

The most popular item of the day has always been the apple dumpling. Dumplings can be served hot or cold, with milk, sugar, or “just so.” For an extra charge, the dumplings can be topped with a scoop of homemade Boehringer’s ice cream.

The cost of the dumplings remains the same: $4 for a single dumpling, $10 for three, or $45 for a case of 15. All dumplings are individually packaged and freeze well. Dietrich suggests purchasing dumpling tickets prior to the event. The tickets will be sold at the Adamstown Post Office on Saturday mornings.

A bushel — and more — of local children are clearly ready to celebrate the 12th Annual Adamstown AppleUmpkin Fest. The happy kids include Brady Kelly, Tyler Karg, Sam Hershey, Claire Kelly, Avery Hershey, Jackson Matos, Morgan Matos, Max Hershey, Matthew Laudenslager, and Lahela Callan.

There will be entertainment all day. A costume parade through the park begins at noon with prizes in various age groups. No registration is necessary; just show up near the pavilion area in costume by 11:45 a.m. A candy scramble for participants follows the parade at 12:30 p.m.

The annual pumpkin chucking contest begins at 1 p.m. with trophies awarded in various age groups.

“Insanity Factor” presents a free magic show on the stage at 2 p.m. and families can enjoy free hayrides from 1 till 4:30 p.m. Children and adults can make their own fall decorations by painting pumpkins or building a scarecrow.

Dietrich said two events have been discontinued — the haunted house and the evening haunted house.

“We lost several of our faithful volunteers who were central in making those two events a success,” said Dietrich. “Rather than having a watered-down version of either thing, we decided to cancel those events at least for this year.”

Dietrich said that although the event is not a major fundraiser, any profits will be used to defray the costs of entertainment and fireworks at Adamstown Community Days on Memorial Day Weekend 2016.
