Business transforms former post office
For more than eight years, the old Denver Post Office at 143 Main St. was just a shell of its past. Built in the 1950s, it was once a bustling post office where Denver residents and businesses picked up their mail, dropped off packages and mailed letters. When the office moved to its current location behind Ephrata National Bank s Denver branch in 2003, the old building was relegated to storage space. Today, the brick-style building has a new lease on life, as the headquarters of Heck Construction of Denver. Founded in 2006 in the basement of his Denver home, Todd Heck started off doing small remodeling jobs and subbed out to area contractors. As opportunities grew for Heck, his staff was increasing and bigger projects were coming his way. In 2009, Heck bid and won its first million dollar project as a residential and commercial general contractor. It was time to move to bigger and better headquarters. It was also an opportunity to take a Denver landmark and give it a new, productive life, while showcasing Heck s construction talents. The post office is a great building in a great location, he said. We are very excited that we can give it a new purpose. And show our clients what kind of work we can do for them.
The post office building was originally built in 1957 by Ewell Service Company, Heck said. For many years, the post office leased the space, until it moved to its current location in 2003. By then, the building was owned by Woodmont Associates, which had purchased it in 2001. When Heck began looking for space in which to expand Heck Construction, the structure was just what he needed for the new offices. It took about seven months to complete the renovations, said Heck, adding that a full-time crew would have gotten the job done in eight weeks or less. We were busy with our clients, of course.
To renovate the space, Heck Construction began by tearing out existing interior walls to make way for the new layout. All of the windows and doors were replaced with energy-efficient aluminum frame store-front style doors and windows. Walls were built to separate the space into offices, creating a lunch/meeting room, kitchenette, reception area, conference room, handicap-accessible restroom and copy room. The back dock was enclosed in order to be used as a storage area for tools and materials. The exterior of the building was updated with all new aluminum gutters, fascia and soffit, as well as Hardi Plank siding and new signage. The renovations also included all new heating and cooling systems. Now we have a beautiful spacious building that enables us to serve our customers better, he said. Where we once shared a tiny 300-square-foot space in the lower level of my home, we now have a spacious 2,500-square-foot office with plenty of room to organize, room to spread out plans and meet with our customers.
Those customers include the Akron Church of the Brethren, which worked with Heck Construction to do a 9,000-square-foot renovation and addition project to build a new gymnasium, commercial kitchen, elevator, classrooms and ADA restrooms. The project also included an expansion of the existing sanctuary and renovations to the existing bathrooms, as well as site improvements to the storm water system and parking lot. Heck Construction received an Excellence in Construction Award from the Keystone Chapter of the ABC (Association of Builders and Contractors) for the project. Another notable project was the Tait Towers offices in Lititz, which involved renovations and an addition to the facility occupied by the award-winning designer and builder of stages and sets for many pop, rock and country artists. The project included many high-end finishes, curved walls, suspended ceiling panels, glass conference rooms, and a contemporary lighting and fixture package, said Heck, adding that the addition included a new stair tower and elevator to serve all three floors. The work at Tait Towers was performed in phases in order to avoid disrupting the demanding work schedule of the owner. To do this, the project management team worked closely with the owner to relocate computer servers and keep facility systems up and running during the extensive remodeling. The Ephrata Community Hospital Sleep Center relied on Heck Construction for its 3,800-square-foot healthcare renovation. The fast-paced project required a demanding eight-week construction schedule. Our project management team worked closely with the architect and the owner to coordinate all aspects of the construction, and address changes and code issues quickly in order to maintain the scheduled completion date, reported Heck.
