Fourth graders become scientists for a day
Thanks to a generous donation from Ephrata National Bank to The S.P.A.R.K.S. Foundation (a science education non-profit located in Mohnton), students at Denver Elementary experienced a day of hands-on science presented by award-winning Science Explorers, Inc.
On Feb. 14, fourth graders participated in a program in order to understand the scientific method and the three states of matter. The classroom was turned into a science lab, and students dressed in lab coats, safety goggles and gloves. Using the scientific method, the students were guided through the steps of their hypotheses, then discussion, then experiments. Sarah Troy, the program director, and Gracene Sirianno and Stephanie Spayd explained the experiments and assisted students, as needed.
Students conducted two experiments. The first demonstrated an endothermic reaction through the mix of baking soda and vinegar, which caused a rubber glove to inflate.
The second experiment demonstrated an exothermic reaction. Students mixed polyurethane A and B in order to create foam akin to that found in insulation and bike helmets. The cups of foam – “matter monsters” – were dyed with food coloring in honor of Valentine’s Day.
Bringing science learning to all students, regardless of socio-economic status, is the mission of The S.P.A.R.K.S. Foundation. It is hoped that the exposure to the amazing side of science will encourage them to pursue STEM learning and possibly choose a STEM career later in life.
