Free manure management plan writing workshops set

By on February 1, 2017

As everyone in agriculture should be aware, all farms generating or using manure must have a written manure management plan. Compliance with all required written plans is imperative.

The Lancaster County Conservation District can help farmers learn the regulations and walk them through writing their own manure management plans.

Three workshops are currently planned. The first one is Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Fivepointville Fire Company, 1087 Dry Tavern Road, Denver. The second will be Wednesday, March 1, at the Intercourse Fire Company, 10 N. Hollander Road, Gordonville. The third is Thursday, March 9, at Rawlinsville Fire Company, 33 Martic Heights Drive, Holtwood. All workshops will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Workshops include morning refreshments and lunch.

Registration for this event is free, but required, by Friday, Feb. 17, (Fivepointville) and Friday, Feb. 24, (Intercourse) and Monday, March 6, (Rawlinsville). Contact the Lancaster County Conservation District at 717-299-5361, ext. 5, to register with name, address, phone number, and number of people attending.

Topics covered during the workshop will include the current requirements for Manure Management Plans, Chapter 102 (Erosion and Sediment Control) updates, and Best Management Practices (BMPs) applicable in a Manure Management Plan. Each attendee will receive a Manure Management Manual. One-on-one assistance will be available in order for attendees to leave the workshop with a potentially completed Manure Management Plan for their farm.

Those who have a copy of the Manure Management Manual should bring it along, as well as any farm maps, and recent soil and manure test results for one’s farm(s). Attendees should know their manure storage facility size, manure application rates, animal numbers, and crop rotation details.

Financial support for these workshops is provided by the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts.
