New Scout Explorer post forming

By on September 28, 2016

A coed Explorer Post, for youth ages 14 to 20 with an interest in wildlife habitat improvement, is forming now.

The post will meet twice a month at Swarr Lodge near the entrance, by the lake, at Camp Mack, located outside of Brickerville. In cold weather Camp Mack’s heated training center will be used.

“Lots of kids don’t want to go to camp, but they do want to learn about the environment,” said Rich Garipoli, field director for the Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Boy Scouts.

“Some students want to explore both the biology and ecology fields, and this program allows for that. It could help students determine in what direction they’d like to go as they progress through school.”

The teens will be able to select what projects and studies to pursue. Topics might include bats, the Lititz Wolf Sanctuary and the Lancaster Conservancy.

In order to register a Scout unit, a minimum of five teens must sign up. With a coed group, at least one of the leaders needs to be male and the other female. One male advisor is already on board with this new endeavor. More leaders are needed.

Interested teens may get more information and sign up by contacting Garipoli, Scout executive in charge of Exploring, at 717-553-4203.
