Yoo-hoo … it really is an igloo!

Curtis Weaver is one guy who doesn’t let being a grown up interfere with his fun.

Reliving his early teens, Weaver, now a 27-year-old feed delivery man, decided to construct a sizable igloo on his front yard along Reinholds Road near Pinoak Road in East Cocalico Township.

So, on the afternoons of Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, Weaver gathered two friends, his dad, and his brother-in-law and the troupe spent several hours constructing their version of an Eskimo abode.

When they were done, the igloo measured more than 10 feet high and had a diameter of 13 feet.

Weaver wasn’t content with just admiring his creation from the outside — he decided to test its livability.

So, on the very frigid night of Feb. 5, when temperatures climbed only to a chilling 6 degrees Fahrenheit, Weaver piled layers of blankets beneath and over him and climbed into a sleeping bag to spend the night in his igloo.

“It wasn’t so bad,” he said. “I stayed warm as long as I didn’t stick my head out of the sleeping bag.”

Through the weather has stayed fairly consistently cold, some warmer days have impacted the igloo.

“I did have to repack it a few times to make it stronger,” he said. Weaver expects the new snow and the extremely cold temperatures projected for the next few days to keep the igloo intact for quite a while longer.

And Weaver has no concerns about the winter weather that so many people would like to see come to an end.

“I like the change of seasons and I think winter is OK,” he said “I really like to shovel snow.”

And, if you are driving around the region, you might just spot another igloo over the county line in Lebanon.

“My cousins in the Schaefferstown area built one last year and again this year,” Weaver said.

It seems that igloos run in the Weaver family!
