AJ’s Pop-Up Mini Golf is back!

AJ’s Pop-Up Mini Golf, the brainchild of AJ Van Grouw (right) is open this weekend on Whitcraft Drive. He is show with his little brother, Alex, promoting the event’s “All Across America” theme.

What started three years ago as a small “pop-up” nine-hole miniature golf course has grown to a full 18 holes for a local Lititz family.

Featuring an upgraded loopy tire hole, more water features, and a host of surprises, AJ’s Pop-Up Mini Golf will take you “All Across America.” Previous years’ courses were themed after popular books and movies.

Coming up with this year’s theme proved to be a challenge for the Van Grouw family.

“We really didn’t nail down a theme until after our own summer vacation,” said Marni Van Grouw. “Traveling is such a big part of most families’ summers, that taking a trip across the country without leaving our yard seemed like a fun idea.”

Players will visit a mine in West Virginia, catch a glimpse of Old Faithful in Wyoming, and test out a ski resort in Vermont.

The course will be open on Aug. 17 and 18, from noon to 8 p.m. both days, 29 Whitcraft Drive, Lititz. Rain dates are Aug. 24 and 25.

A suggested minimum donation of $2 per player will benefit the Heatherwood Bike Park, a local project being built along the Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail. It will feature different areas for all ages and skill levels. Plans are also in the works for a “Build Your Own Bike” program to help put less fortunate kids on bikes.

Austin Van Grouw (“AJ”), a sixth grader at Bonfield Elementary and the mini golf’s creator, recently discovered mountain biking. Following a visit to a state park in Massachusetts, he fell in love with a pump track that was built there for bikers. He was thrilled to learn that something even more amazing was in the works close to his hometown.

“Mini golfing and mountain biking are two of my favorite sports,” he said. “I’m hoping for a great turnout this year.”

All ages are welcome. Putters, score cards, and balls are provided. However, if you have a favorite putter of your own, feel free to bring it along. Free snacks and beverages will be available as well. Don’t miss this opportunity for a fun outing and a unique way to support a course with a cause.

Is it California? Colorado? Vermont? Doesn’t matter! AJ is going skiing!
