Anna & Elizabeth will perform at Eicher

By on August 5, 2015

The folk singing duo Anna & Elizabeth will perform renditions of traditional mountain music on Aug. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Eicher Arts Center, Ephrata.

Elizabeth LaPrelle, an award-winning ballad singer who also plays banjo, said most of the duo’s songs are traditional folk songs from Virginia and Kentucky.

She said that at the Eicher concert, “We’ll be doing some gospel songs, some very old ballads, and some more upbeat old-time songs. All of the songs in the show tell a story — whether it’s a story of someone besting the devil in a game of riddles or the story of a soldier heading off to the Civil War.”

LaPrelle has been getting recognition for her singing since she was 11. She won the Henry Reed Award from the Library of Congress at the age of 16 and won the Mike Seeger Award from Folk Alliance International in 2012.

Anna Roberts-Gevalt sings and plays banjo, fiddle and guitar. To enhance their concerts, the duo display shadow puppets and crankies (cloth and cut-up paper scrolls depicting scenes from ballads) that they have made.

Admission to the concert at the Eicher Center, 409 Cocalico St. in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Community Park, is free. Refreshments will be provided. Donations to the arts center will be accepted.
