Celebrate Indian culture in Lititz Springs Park July 22

By on June 21, 2017

The Indian American Fusion Group of Lancaster will once again host MELA beginning at 3 p.m. July 22 at the Lititz Spring Park.

The festival is the brainchild of Satish Dwivedi, a resident of Lititz and an audio technician for Clair Global. The word mela in Sanskrit means, “to meet or gather.” It is also used synonymously with “fair.” The South Asian Diaspora has brought this concept to the rest of the world and the English language has adopted this word to mean theme based exhibitions, gathering or fairs.

Associated with this gathering are entertainers, merchants, food courts and fine art demonstrations, with fun things to do for all the family and also make it a social meeting place for thousands of people who probably have not see each other in years.

The largest such gathering was held in India in 2001 for the celebration of Kumba Mela when 60 million people gathered, the biggest celebratory gathering ever recorded in world history.

The Indian American Fusion Group of Lancaster was founded in 2014. IAFGL was created to facilitate and promote various cultural, social, religious, ethnic, activities in Lancaster County.

“At this coming event attendees will experience and get to understand and enjoy Indian culture up close and personal,” Dwivedi said, “As organizer, I believe that Lititz residents being the ‘cool’ folks they are will openly embrace and love the experience.”

Attendees will be able to experience Indian-American culture hands-on through various activities from the very onset. Lititz Mayor Tim Snyder will also be on hand.

Although the event is free, an RSVP is requested at iafglorg@gmail.com with the number of individuals attending. Walk-ins are welcome but prior registration is preferred to help food venders prepare for the day.
