Martha D. Stoner, 91,  of Akron, spent a long, long time perfecting a crocheted, full-size bedspread made for one of her six children.

But the wait was worth it as the bedspread won 1st prize in its class at the 100th Pennsylvania  Farm Show this week.

IMG_7711-Hands_FotorMartha has been diligently working on this piece for the past three years, her son Mark Stoner noted on Tuesday.

It’s the second such spread that Martha has completed and it was done as a gift to her eldest daughter, Susan Wanner of Akron.

“Sue’s birthday just happens to be, today (Jan. 12),” Mark said.IMG_7708-Martha_Fotor

The spread, which features a popcorn stitch arranged in a diamond pattern, is made up of 320 individual five-inch square blocks.

These blocks were then crocheted together and fringe was added along three sides.

Martha’s design was entered in the crafts open section under the family living department. It won  in the home-related accessories crocheted spread-afghan  class.

The Ephrata Review’s Facebook announcement of the win drew an avalanche of support for Martha who is a retired Ephrata middle-school teacher.

In fact Martha’s picture attracted  a reach of  more than 45,000 combined on the Ephrata Review and Lititz Record Express Facebook pages since it was posted on Tuesday afternoon
