Amanda Baum, Highland Elementary teacher, dies Amanda Baum

Highland Elementary School Teacher Amanda Gockley Baum, Ephrata, passed away at 94 years of age Sunday, June 5, 2011.

Mrs. Baum was born on February 25, 1917 in Ephrata, Pa. She was the widow of John L. Baum and daughter of the late Elmer E. and Amanda Henly Gockley.

She was a graduate of Denver High School and 1937 graduate from Millersville State Teachers College.

Mrs. Baum was an elementary school teacher for 42 years. She began her teaching career in 1935 at the Pleasant Retreat School in West Cocalico Township. Over the years, she taught at several schools in the Denver and Ephrata areas, including Bergstrasse School, Reamstown Elementary, Reinholds Elementary and Franklin Street Elementary. In 1962 she began teaching at Highland Elementary School where she taught for 26 years until retiring in 1988.

Amanda was a member of the Bergstrasse Lutheran Church and enjoyed old cars, traveling and inspiring her students to do their very best.

She is survived by a sister, Mary H. Gockley of Reinholds.

Amanda was predeceased by a brother, Jacob H. Gockley, and a sister, Marian G. Roseboro.

A viewing will be held on June 10 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Mellingers Lutheran Church, 80 Gockley Road, Stevens, followed by funeral services at 2 p.m. with Rev. Timothy Craven and Rev. Herbert Lohr officiating. Burial will take place in the Mellingers Cemetery.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bergstrasse Lutheran Church in Ephrata, 9 Hahnstown Road, Ephrata, PA 17522.
