Area residents win big at Farm Show

The Pennsylvania Farm Show got off to a great start for local residents.

Matthew N. Mitchell of Reinholds was a big winner this year. He won the Angus Grand Champion Female award in the Breeding Beef Cattle-Open and Junior Department. He also received the following awards in the same department and section: fist, Angus Junior Heifer Calves; Angus Early Junior Heifer Calf Champion; first, Angus Early Senior Heifer Calves; Angus Senior Heifer Calf Champion; second, Angus Early Summer Yearling Heifers; second, Angus April Junior Yearling Heifers; and Angus Reserve Grand Champion Female.

In the Junior Angus Breeding section, Mitchell was honored with the following: fourth, Angus Junior Heifer Calves, calved April 1 through 15; first, Angus Junior Heifer Calves, calved March 16 through 31; third, Angus Junior Heifer Calves, calved February; second, Angus Early Senior Heifer Calves, calved September and October; first, Angus Early summer Yearling Heifers, calved May and June; Angus Intermediate Champion; first, Angus April Junior Yearling Heifers, calved April; Angus Junior Champion Female; and Angus Reserve Grand Champion Female. Mitchell received a third in Junior Market Animals, Junior Crossbred Beef Steers, Crossbred Light Heavyweight 1.

Kevin Friesema of Adamstown also took home many awards, receiving first place awards in Poultry — Bantam Game, Old English Game, Self Blue and Spangled; Bantam Feather Legged, Belgian Bearded d’Uccle, Bearded Porcelain; Best of Bantam Game, Reserve of Variety Old English Game Self Blue; Best of Variety Old English Game Spangled; and Best of Variety Belgian Bearded d’Uccle Bearded Porcelain. He earned second in Bantam Game, Old English Game Spangled, and Bantam Feather Legged, Silkie Bearded White.

Sierra Zimmerman of Stevens earned two awards in the Junior Market Animals Department, Southdown Market Lamb. She won Champion and first, Purebred Southdown Market Lamb Lighweight.

Madison Weaver of Ephrata won multiple times in the Breeding Beef Cattle-Open and Junior Department for the Weaver Show Cattle. Her awards consisted of a sixth in Angus, Angus Junior Heifer Calves and a fourth in Junior Angus Breeding, Angus Junior Heifer Calves, calved March 16 through March 31. She also took a third for the Lisnageer Farm in Junior Market Animals, Junior Crossbred Beef Steers, Crossbred Light Heavyweight 2.

Other local winners were: Jean Muiznieks of Denver, third in Family Living, Foods, Angel Food Cake Contest; Natalie Sensenig of Denver, second in Family Living, 4-H Textile Science Senior, Separates, Two or More Non-Tailored Outfit; Kevin Pfautz of the Pfautz Show Pigs, Ephrata, Swine Department, first and third placings in Duroc, Duroc March and after Gilts and a fourth in Yorkshire, Yorkshire January Gilts; Kyle Enck of Ephrata, seventh in the Junior Market Animals Department, Southdown Market Lamb, Purebred Southdown Market Lamb Lightweight; and Jayne Wenger of Denver, first, Family Living, Foods, Hershey’s Cocoa Classic Chocolate Cake Contests.

Awards in Junior Market Animals went to the following Reinholds residents: Jade Zimmerman, fourth, Angus Steers, Purebred Angus Steer Heavyweight; Chelsea Dale, second, Southdown Market Lamb, Purebred Southdown Market Lamb Lightweight; Jason Zimmerman, third, Southdown Market Lamb, Purebred Southdown Market Lamb Lightweight; Josh Zimmerman, first, Southdown Market Lamb, Purebred Southdown Market Lamb Mediumweight; Joe Zimmerman, fourth, Southdown Market Lamb Mediumweight; Jade Zimmerman, eighth, Southdown Market Lamb, Purebred Southdown Market Lamb Mediumweight; Jessica Zimmerman, ninth, Southdown Market Lamb, Purebred Southdown Market Lamb Mediumweight; Jayme Zimmerman, 10th, Southdown Market Lamb, Purebred Southdown Market Lamb Mediumweight; Chelsea Dale, Reserve Champion, Southdown Market Lamb.
