Rare photo indeed

By on October 17, 2012

This rare color image shows one of the most beloved former traditions of the Ephrata Fair -- the Saturday night new car give-aways. Because color photography was so rare in the '50s, this image most surely was never published previously and likely hasn't been seen by many. Provided by Donald Nissley from the collection of his father, the photo is believed to be from the 1955 fair, as the cars depicted are 1956 models. For many years the Ephrata Lions Club sold chances for the raffle, and the cars were then given away at midnight on the final night of the fair. Shown selling tickets is Carl Gockley. Also of note is the Sears Roebuck sign on the Royer Building in the background. (Photo by Donald Nissley, Sr.)
