Daniel LeRoy Shearer, 98, former minister at Ephrata First Church

Daniel LeRoy Shearer, 98, Willow Valley Communities, Lancaster, died peacefully Thursday, March 31, 2016, of natural causes.

He was born Sept. 6, 1917 on a farm in North Codorus Township, York County, the oldest of seven children born to Monroe Julius and Edith Sarah Diehl Shearer Sr.

He attended Senft’s School No. 1, a one-room public school in North Codorus Township, and graduated from the Spring Grove High School in 1934. He earned degrees from Lebanon Valley College, Annville; United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio; and Mount Airy Lutheran Seminary in Philadelphia. He received an honorary degree from Lebanon Valley College (Doctor of Divinity, 1965). In 1959, he was elected a trustee of the college. He served in that capacity until 1987, when he was granted the status of trustee emeritus.

He was married June 7, 1939, to Irma Isabel Sheetz, a native of Elizabethville. Their marriage was blessed with three sons and one daughter: Daniel Fred (married to Norma Woolston) Halifax; Fred Ceylon (married to Jewel Sheppard) Linglestown; James Monroe, Palmyra; Patricia Shearer Larthey, Elizabethville; seven grandsons; one granddaughter; six great-granddaughters; five great-grandsons; and one great-great-grandson.

Ordained in October 1941, Rev. Shearer served the following churches: Harrisburg First Church, 1944-1953; Ephrata First Church, 1953-1962; and the Hummelstown Trinity Church, 1962-1968. On Jan. 1, 1970, he was appointed district superintendent in the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the newly established United Methodist Church. On July 1, 1973, he was appointed conference program director. On July 1, 1980, he was appointed superintendent of the State College District. Upon retirement in 1982, he was appointed part-time administrative assistant to the bishop of the Harrisburg Episcopal Area of the United Methodist Church and served until June 30, 1991.

After 41 years of living in parsonages the Shearers purchased a home in the Hershey-Hummelstown area in 1982 and resided there until moving to the Willow Valley Retirement Communities, Lancaster, on July 5, 1995.

A memorial service and luncheon will be held at the Ephrata First United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 9. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the memorial service, that begins at 11 a.m. A private graveside service will be held following the luncheon at Maple Grove Cemetery, Elizabethville.
