Deaths of Local Interest – Aug. 10, 2016

Lois Lorraine Burkholder, 81, of Washington Boro, was received in the arms of her loving Lord Aug. 3. Lois was a homemaker and a true helpmate to her husband on the farm. She loved the outdoors and fresh air. Lois was a member of Living Light Mennonite Church and served the Lord there and in many capacities. Her brother, Kenneth Buckwalter, husband of Marlene (Weaver), lives in Ephrata.

Erma W. Martin, 71, of Manheim, died Aug. 5 at her home, after a battle with cancer. She was a homemaker and a member of White Oak Mennonite Church. Erma greatly enjoyed her family and grandchildren. A brother, Leon Garman, lives in Ephrata. A brother, Luke (Mary Ann) Garman, resides in Denver.

Kenneth D. “Kenny” Patterson Jr., 29, died Aug. 4 at Hospice & Community Care in Mount Joy after a lengthy illness. Kenny was a nationally registered critical care paramedic; most recently he had been working for Crozer-Keystone Health Systems for Delaware County Memorial Hospital EMS. His mother, Cheri Patterson, lives in East Earl.

Teresa Mary Pilley, 99, passed away Aug. 2 at her New Holland home. As she was raising their family, Teresa did proofreading and deliveries for Charlie’s in-home printing business. Then after the children were grown she worked part time at Girard Bank, Philadelphia; and the Lancaster County Courthouse, in the voter registration office. She baked wonderful cookies and pies. Her daughter, Mary Lee Gorman, wife of Tom, lives in Ephrata.

Ethel Mae Poppe, 78, of Leola, passed away peacefully after a lengthy battle with cancer Aug. 2. A homemaker and member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Lancaster, she enjoyed travelling, gardening and spending time with family. Her daughter, Jeane Poppe, resides in Ephrata.

Mary L. Wilson (née Davis), 84, passed away July 30 in Lancaster. Mary served as an elementary school teacher in the Southern Columbia Area school district in Elysburg and Catawissa, for many years. She and her husband, Richard, were longtime members of American Coaster Enthusiasts. They spent much of their retirement traveling the country to ride roller coasters. A daughter, Linda W. Nicholas, wife of Tom, lives in Ephrata.

Rufus Z. Zimmerman, 68, of Lebanon, passed on to his eternal reward Aug. 2, at home. He was a member of the Mount Zion Mennonite Church. A brother, Abram Z., husband of Mary Ellen Nolt Zimmerman, lives in Ephrata.
