Deaths of Local Interest – March 16, 2016

Stephen S. Esh, 88, of Fairmount Homes, Ephrata, formerly of Churchtown, entered the presence of the Lord March 5 following a lengthy illness. He worked for many years as a shop foreman at C.U. Stoltzfus Manufacturing, retiring in 1992. Steve was on the pastoral team at Red Run Mennonite Church for 11 years prior to his retirement. A wonderful husband and family man, Steve loved to spend time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Divina M. Lugaro, 98, of Reading, passed away at her home March 9. She was a member of the Latta Memorial Presbyterian Church in Christians. She later lived in the Lancaster area and attended the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Ephrata. Divina was an accomplished seamstress by trade.

Mary E. Neff, 76, formerly of Strasburg, passed away March 12 at Fairmount Homes of Ephrata. She was a member of Grace Point Church of Paradise, where in the past she was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher and was involved with the sewing circle. She enjoyed singing with the Manheim Area Chorus, knitting and taking care of flowers.

Melvin M. Stauffer, 72, of Bethel, passed away March 12 in Manor Care, Lebanon. Melvin was employed in poultry processing and was a truck driver. He was a member of the Bethel Mennonite Church of the Weaverland Conference. His daughter, Brenda Martin, wife of John; sister, Verna Weiler, wife of Ralph, and sister-in-law, Joyce Strite, wife of Stephen, all reside in Ephrata.

Charles L. Van Gorden, 85, of Lititz peacefully passed away March 9 at The Manor of Luther Acres. After serving four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, Charlie graduated from Franklin and Marshall College with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He also earned a master’s in Education from the University of Pittsburgh. He was a professor at Millersville University, retiring in 1995. His daughter, Joyce Kuster, resides in Denver.
