Earl L. Swartz, 91, WWII vet, worked at Essig Plumbing, enjoyed dogs, tractors

Earl L. Swartz, 91, passed away Monday, Feb. 16, 2015, at 11:53 a.m., at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

He was the husband of Ruth (Shirk) Swartz, with whom he shared 68 years of marriage. Born in Bowmansville, he was the son of the late Paul and Katie (Musser) Swartz.

Earl was a 1941 graduate of the former Shillington High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II from 1943 through 1946. He was stationed in the Rhineland in Central Europe and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he worked for Paul Wise as a bricklayer. Later he worked as a master plumber, last employed by Essig Plumbing and retiring in the late 1980s. He loved gardening, woodworking, his grandchildren, his dogs, and being on his tractors.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three children: Joanne (Swartz), wife of Lee Pfleger of Denver; Mary (Swartz), wife of David Silcox of Shillington; and Dennis Sr., husband of Annbeth (Mosser) Swartz of Brecknock Township; seven grandchildren: Jill Legerton, Chris Pfleger, Lisa Pfleger, Bradley Silcox, Amy Silcox, Heather Swartz, and Dennis Swartz Jr.; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter: Nancy Swartz; and two sisters: Miriam Mays, and Kathryn Swartz.

A memorial service was held Feb. 22 at Allegheny United Church of Christ, Mohnton. Interment was private.
