George Agourides, 88, owned local luncheonettes

George Agourides

George Agourides

George Agourides (affectionately known as Pappa Bear), 88, formerly of Ephrata, and Long Branch, N.J., passed away Saturday Dec. 28, 2013 at Lancashire Hall in Lancaster.

George was born July 27, 1925 in Lancaster. He was the son of the late Anna (Karabetsos) Agourides and John Agourides.

He went to McCaskey High School. George attended the Greek Orthodox Church of Lancaster. He owned and operated luncheonettes in his early days and became a home improvement salesman later in his life.

He loved to joke and make people laugh. He was always the life of the party.

George was preceded in death by his wife Zahaloula (Lou) Petrow, his long time companion Gloria Witmer and his brother Dr. Leon Agourides.

He is survived by two daughters: Johanna Agourides of Boardman, Ohio; Denise, wife of Richard Rose of Newmanstown; one son: George Agourides, Jr., husband of Charlotte of Palmdale, Calif.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by the family of Gloria Witmer including Dale and Doris Olney.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.
