Harry Steffy, 95, WWII vet, Adamstown Borough worker, Adamstown Lions Club president

Harry Steffy, 95, formerly of Ephrata, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, at Remington House in Conyers, Ga.

Harry was born in Reinholds, the son of the late Elam and Laura (Kochel) Steffy. He and his wife Kathryn (Gerhart) celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Sept. 1, 2015.

Harry proudly served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a staff sergeant and crew chief for P40 and P47 Fighter planes. He served with the 314th Fighter Squadron, which was attached to the 324th Fighter Group. This group served in India, Africa, and Europe and it received two Presidential Citations and the French War Cross.

After returning from the war, Harry was employed by the Berkshire Knitting Mills, Wyomissing, the Lancaster Airport, and the Hemmerich Knitting Mill in Denver. He then was employed by Berkshire Greens Construction Co. of Reading, where he worked for 30 years. He retired from construction in 1985 and then worked part-time for Adamstown Borough.

He was a lifelong member of Swamp Reformed Church, which was later renamed Swamp Christian Fellowship, in Reinholds. During that time he served as president of the church consistory, the Willing Workers, and was active in many various activities of the church. He was also a member of the Adamstown Lions Club where he served a term as president.

In addition to his wife Kathryn, his survivors include: daughter: Carol Ann, wife of the late Larry Henly, of Conyers, Ga.; granddaughter: Cheri, wife of Mark Isenhour; and two great-granddaughters: Ashlyn and Alexis Isenhour, all of Lawrenceville, Ga. Additionally, he is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Harry was preceded in death by a daughter: Cathy Jean, wife of Robert (Jimmy) Seeman, of Lutz, Fla.; two sisters: Susan Sensenig of Denver; and Kathryn Edris of Annville; and three brothers: John, Charles, and George Steffy, all of Lancaster County.

Friends and family are invited to attend the funeral at Swamp Church on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 3 p.m. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 2 to 3 p.m. in the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Swamp Christian Fellowship Church, 390 Swamp Church Road, Reinholds, PA 17569.
