Helen G. Knerr, 96, Denver school secretary, active at Faith Lutheran, ECH volunteer

Helen G. Knerr, 96, of Denver, passed away Monday, Dec. 14, 2015, at Maple Farm in Akron.

She was born in Reinholds to the late George and Nettie (Huntzinger) Gensemer, and was the wife of the late W. Luther Knerr, who died in 1980.

She was a member of Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was very active with church council and Sunday School. She also volunteered at Ephrata hospital. She loved traveling, gardening, reading, going on bus trips, and antiquing.

Helen attended the McCann’s School of Business. She was the first secretary to the superintendent for the Denver School, which later became Cocalico School District.

Helen is survived by two daughters: Christine K., wife of the late Henry Buffington; and Diane K. Schantz; four grandchildren: Eric and Vicki Schweitzer, Stephen and Troy Schantz; and six great-grandchildren: Erika, Kyle, Taylor, Sienna, Owen, and Hunter.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister and four brothers.

Services were held Dec. 21 at Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church, Denver, with Pastor Joseph Veres officiating. Interment followed in the Fairview Cemetery.
