James ‘Jim’ Hoyt, 64, retired postal worker, enjoyed history, metal detecting, and fishing

James “Jim” Hoyt, 64, of Ephrata, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital, after struggling with many health issues in the preceding months.

He was born in Lindenhurst, N.Y., to the late George and Sophie (Ambrosky) Hoyt, and was the husband of Deborah (Hoffman) Hoyt, with whom he enjoyed 21 years of marriage.

Jim worked for the United States Postal Service for 43 years before retiring in 2013. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, metal detecting, dogs, and had a strong interest in history. He was a kind and gentle man who enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two brothers: Douglas Hoyt of Islip, Long Island, N.Y.; Daniel Hoyt of Lindenhurst, Long Island, N.Y.; a sister, Kathy, wife of Earl Filkins of Selkirk, N.Y.; a half brother: Karl Hoyt of Hadley, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister: Patricia Tunstal.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 17, from 4 to 5 p.m., at Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Ave., Ephrata, followed by a memorial service at 5 p.m., with Bruce Fassnacht officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
