Jean M. (Rudy) Kreider, 91, Ephrata school cafeteria worker, baker, canner, Holy Trinity member

Jean M. (Rudy) Kreider, 91, of Lititz, and formerly of Ephrata, passed away Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at Heart of Lancaster Hospital in Lititz.

Jean was the wife of Marlin I. Kreider. They were married Nov. 7, 1942, and resided at Luther Care the last four years. Jean was born in Warwick Township Dec. 31, 1924, to the late Elam and Mabel Rudy.

In addition to her husband, Jean is survived by three children: Janis, wife of Martin Swartz, of Lititz; Barry, husband of Gloria, of Ephrata; Sherry, wife of Brian Gilchrest, of Pittsburgh; seven grandchildren: John and Jeffrey Swartz, Tania Kreider, Andrew, Eric, and Adam Gilchrest and Emily (Gilchrest) Jones; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter: Patricia.

Jean was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ephrata, where she previously was active in Sunday School, altar guild, and other ministries. She also volunteered many years at the Ephrata Hospital and with Meals on Wheels. Jean graduated from Ephrata High School in 1942 and was employed for many years as a cafeteria worker in the Ephrata School District. Jean’s greatest delight was making a home for her family. She loved to cook, bake, and sew and entered baked goods and canned goods in local fair competitions. She had an infectious smile and loved to laugh.

Her family wishes to thank the staff of the Heart of Lancaster Hospital for their compassionate care and Pastor Herbener and Donna Nace for their pastoral care.

Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Henry E. Herbener, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St. Ephrata. Jean’s family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Place of interment will be Lincoln Cemetery, Apple St. in Ephrata.
