John L. Bender, 96, decorated WWII, Korea vet, Armstrong, Yellow Freight worker

John L. Bender, 96, of Ephrata entered into rest on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at the VA Medical Center in Lebanon.

His wife, Betty Ruth Bender, died in 1999. Born in Providence on Dec. 10, 1921, he was a son of the late Jacob and Aida (White) Bender.

John proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts.

He worked at Armstrong Flooring for 32 years and retired from Yellow Freight after 10 years of employment.

He is survived by a son: John L. Bender Jr., widower of Carol Bender; two daughters: Pamela K., wife of Dennis Reis; and Beth Anne Lopez, companion of Donald Deibler; four brothers: Jim, Ralph, Lloyd, and Roy Bender; a sister: Rhoda Gerlach; seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Services were held July 13 at Groff’s Family Funeral & Cremation Services, Lancaster, with The Reverend Helen Adams officiating. Interment with military honors followed at Riverview Burial Park.
