John Ocker, D&E retiree, decorated WWII veteran
John A. Ocker, 86, of Akron, and formerly of Ephrata, passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 at Luther Acres in Lititz.
John was the husband of Shirley L. (Phillips) Ocker, with whom he celebrated 64 years of marriage.
John was born in New Cumberland, son of the late John A. and Wilhelmina (Stigler) Ocker.
He was a resident of Akron since 1966 and retired from the former D&E Telephone Co. of Ephrata in 1987 after 33 years of employment. John served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars, Arrowhead and Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Cocalico Post 3376 VFW and Cloister Post 429 American Legion, all of Ephrata, and was formerly an Assistant Scout Master in Boy Scout Troop 73 of Ephrata. John enjoyed travel, camping, fishing, hunting and woodworking.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons: Dennis L., husband of Rebecca Ocker, of Lititz; and Jerome R., husband of Laura Ocker, of King of Prussia; five grandchildren; and one brother: Calvin E. Ocker, of Ephrata.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a sister: Shirley Davis.
Funeral services were held Oct. 3 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Ephrata, with the Rev. Henry E. Herbener officiating. Interment with military honors accorded by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard were held at Memory Gardens, East Cocalico Township.
