Joseph Zimmerman Shirk, 81, Hobart Foundry retiree, father of five

Joseph Zimmerman Shirk, 81, of Mount Crawford, Va., passed away Monday June 19, 2017, at the Sentara RMH Medical Center.

Mr. Shirk was born Aug. 12, 1935 in Ephrata, and was a son of the late Joseph and Martha (Zimmerman) Shirk.

Joseph was a member of the Pike Mennonite Church in Virginia; and previously Sharon Mennonite Church in Elida, Ohio. He lived in Ohio from 1969 until 2001 when he and his wife moved to Mount Crawford. he retired from the Hobart Foundry.

On Oct. 6, 1960, he married the former Mabel Hurst Rissler who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Mervin Shirk (Beverly), Elida, Ohio; Eileen Evans (Brian) Bellefontaine, Ohio; Mary Ellen Petre (Eldon) Dayton, Va.; Lois Rodes (Fred), Mount Crawford, Va.; Eunice Slabaugh (Steve) McGaheysville, Va.; a brother: Edwin Shirk (Martha) Ephrata; a sister: Esther Hoover (Ivan), Narvon; 22 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by siblings: Menno Shirk, Israel Shirk, Paul Shirk, Aaron Shirk, and Suzanna Zimmerman.

The funeral service was held June 22 at Pike Mennonite Church, Harrisonburg, Va., with Fred Rodes, Wade Knicely, Nelson Showalter, John Swartz, and Ellis Beery officiating. Burial was held in the Church Cemetery.
