Kay William Shober, 89, USO entertainer, merchandiser for J.C. Riley, church board member

Kay William Shober, 89, formerly of Reading, passed away Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, in Reading Hospital and Medical Center.

He was the husband of Charmaine (Reich) Shober. Born in Denver, he was the son of the late Howard and Sallie (Brossman) Shober.

Kay was a Mason of the 26th Order, an entertainer with the United Service Organization, (USO) and was a merchandiser for J.C. Riley in Philadelphia for many years until retiring. He was also a longstanding member and served on the board at Grace Lutheran Church in Reading.

Kay is survived by one son: David K. Smither, husband of Polly of Reading; and four stepsons: Claude Lantz, husband of Dottie of Delaware; Rodney Lantz, husband of Cathy of Pottstown; James Lantz, husband of Nikki of Newmanstown; and William Lantz, husband of Donna of Wyomissing Hills. Kay also is survived by three stepdaughters: Marinne, wife of Frank Jones of Georgia; Ellen Fritz, wife of James Fritz of Auburn; and Levana, wife of Neal Thomason of Lebanon; 33 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one stepdaughter: Denise, wife of William Stahlberg of Reading.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday Oct. 12, at 10:30 a.m., in Phoebe Berks Chapel, 9 Reading Drive, Wernersville. Interment will follow at Muddy Creek Cemetery, Denver.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, 1 Billy Graham Parkway, Charlotte, NC 28201-0001; and Salvation Army – Reading Corps, 301 S. 5th Street, Reading, PA 19602.
