Luther Clair Shimp, 92, Denver H.S. grad, WWII vet, active OMPH member, motor shop salesman

Luther Clair Shimp, 92, of Ephrata, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018 at home.

He was the husband of Patricia Shimp, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage. He was the son of the late William Shimp and Mabel Miller.

Luther was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, where he served as usher for 41 years and was a member of the benevolent society, volunteering at their food bank for over 40 years.

A graduate of Denver High School, Luther served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service during World War II. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3376 where he served as chaplain for 16 years.

He worked at several motor shops in the area as a salesman. Luther loved birdwatching, gardening, camping, traveling, and his fish pond.

Besides his wife, he is survived by six children: Catherine M., wife of Randy Flores of East Earl; Michael S., of Denver; Edward P., husband of Terrie, of Akron; Daniel T., husband of Kathy, of Woodward; Stephen V., of Ephrata; and Joseph W., husband of Jody, of Ephrata; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Luther was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: LeRoy and Glenn Shimp.

Services were held Jan. 9 at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church, Ephrata. Final commendation and farewell were at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
