Mary Jane Myers, 92, active in many local organizations
Mary Jane Kready Myers, 92, a resident of Landis Homes Retirement Community and formerly of Ephrata, peacefully entered her eternal home July 5, 2014.
She was born in Ephrata, daughter of the late Elam and Elizabeth Stamm Kready. Her husband Levi “Jack” S. Myers preceded her in death in December 2000.
A member of the class of 1940 from Ephrata High School, she attended Lancaster Business School and worked as a legal secretary in law offices in Lancaster in the 1940s. She also served on the rationing board in Ephrata during WWII. She was a long time member of Bethany UCC in Ephrata and was married in the church in 1946. Mary Jane was very active in various civic organizations in the Ephrata area for many years. She also served as a Welcome Wagon hostess in the 1970s and later enjoyed her part time job at the Ephrata Cloister Gift Shop.
Mary Jane was very active in the Ephrata Women’s Club and their charity balls and beautification projects in Ephrata. Mary Jane enjoyed hosting dinner parties and entertaining at her home. She loved people and was a very dedicated daughter, wife and mother. If someone was in need of a meal or a ride to a doctor, Mary Jane could be counted on to be on hand at a moment’s notice.
Mary Jane and her husband enjoyed traveling to the 8th Air Force reunions each year. They made many friends and one of Mary Jane’s highlights was hosting the 8th Air Force 388th Group in Lancaster County in 1977. No matter where their travels took them in the world they would make lifelong friends who loved to visit Ephrata and Lancaster County.
Mary Jane loved the land and the historic home she was born in on North Academy Drive. In 2007 she moved to Landis Homes where she enjoyed playing bridge and other card games while in independent living. Mary Jane loved riding her scooter and visiting friends at Landis Homes. Her smile and encouragement brightened many days for people at Landis Homes.
Mary Jane is survived by a daughter: Delphine Dawn Heimer of East Hempfield Twp. Lancaster, wife of Dr. Paul G. Heimer, Jr.
Delphine wants to thank the loving and caring staff at Landis Homes; especially the three years she was a resident in the Birch House. Also, Hospice was wonderful these past few months. In the past year of her life she enjoyed visits by Onyx the beautiful black cat who was born at Landis Homes and adopted by a staff member. Onyx would visit each week and mother became an advocate of pet therapy.
A celebration of Mary Jane’s life will be held at Bethany West Chapel at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Rd., Lititz on Wednesday, July 23 at 11 a.m. with Chaplain Jim Leaman officiating. Family visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the “Caring Fund” at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Rd., Lititz, PA 17543 or to Hospice and Community Care P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604 would be appreciated.
