Robert L. Charles, 90, WWII/Korea vet, poultry tech, member of Ephrata Legion, VFW

Robert L. Charles, 90, a resident of Cornwall Manor in Lebanon, passed away Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015. Robert was born in Strasburg, and lived in Ephrata, from 1954 until moving to Cornwall Manor in 2013.

He was the loving husband of Elizabeth (Betty Shreiner) Charles for 61 years, and son of the late John R. Charles and Florence M. (Good) Charles.

In addition to his wife: Betty; he is survived by a daughter: Patricia, wife of Fred Maier of Lebanon; a grandson: Yale Maier of Lebanon; and a sister: Marian, wife of Floyd Anderson of Lancaster.

Robert was preceded in death by a brother: Harold Charles.

After graduation from Strasburg High School, Robert joined the U.S. Navy and served for 4½ years during World War II and the Korean War. He worked as a poultry technician at a number of hatcheries most of his life.

Robert was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ephrata and was a life member of the American Legion Cloister Post 429 and Ephrata VFW Cocalico Valley Post 3376. He was also a member of the Ephrata Friendly Circle and served for a number of years on Meals on Wheels.

Robert’s family wishes to express their appreciation for the kind and compassionate care given by everyone at Circle One at Cornwall Manor.

Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Henry E. Herbener, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at Paul L. Gravenor Home for Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Place of interment will be Memory Gardens, East Cocalico Township.
