Sophie Witkowski, 93, Terre Hill, homemaker, mother of four, enjoyed family, gardening

Sophie Witkowski, 93, of Terre Hill, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, and is now comfortable in her home in Heaven.

Sophie was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Mary (Mikzierricz) and Joseph Smialy, who had immigrated to the United States from Poland.

She spent her younger years in Cleveland and married John Witkowski on Sept. 23, 1944 while John was home on leave during World War II. They moved to a new home in Parma Heights in 1954 which was home until 2011, when Sophie moved next door to her daughter, Jan. Although Sophie worked part-time she was primarily a homemaker who enjoyed entertaining friends and relatives, raising her four children, and pampering grandchildren. Sophie liked working in her garden and with flowers, but her true joy was spending time with family and friends.

Sophie is survived by her children: John (wife Kathy) of Brighton, Mich.; Jerry of Corvallis, Ore.; and Jan Garrabrandt (husband Bruce) of Terre Hill; four grandchildren: Tammy Malley (husband Justin) of Truckee, Calif.; Holly Lloyd (husband JJ) of Northville, Mich.; Jeff of Lyons, Colo.; and Jesse of Marquette, Mich.; and seven great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband: John; and her son: James.

Sophie was known for her infectious smile, which brought joy to everyone around her and the image of which will stay with all who knew her.

A memorial Mass was held Nov. 23 at Our Mother of Perpetual Help, Ephrata.
