Walter Z. Burkholder, 92, Sperry New Holland worker, enjoyed hunting and playing Rook

Walter Z. Burkholder, 92, formerly of Leola, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2016, at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy.

He was born in Rapho Township to the late Jacob and Elizabeth (Zimmerman) Burkholder, and was the husband of the late Esther (Horst) Burkholder, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage before she passed in 2003.

He was a member of Metzler’s Mennonite Church. Walter was a machine operator for Sperry New Holland for many years; after retiring, he worked part time for Oregon Dairy. He was a member of the Overlook Hunting Camp, Tioga County. He enjoyed hunting, deep sea fishing, and birdwatching. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and family playing cards, especially the game of Rook.

Walter is survived by four daughters: Ann Eberly of Akron; Judy, wife of Clyde Brandt, of Elm; Rose, wife of Amos Reiff Jr., of Ephrata; Ruth, wife of Ronald Martin, of New Holland; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Abram Burkholder of Leola; and Leon, husband of Pat Burkholder, of Ephrata.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter: Jean Martin; six brothers; and four sisters.

Services were held Dec. 16 at Metzler’s Mennonite Church, Ephrata, with Pastor Nevin Horning officiating. Interment took place in Metzler’s Mennonite Cemetery.
