Pastry shop owner, Anna Achenbach, dies

EPHRATA - Anna S. Bender Achenbach, 83, of 3001 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, died May 1,
2008 after a lengthy illness.
She was the wife of the late Leon E.
Achenbach. Together they were the founders and 30-year owners of
Achenbach's Pastry Shop in Leola. She also was credit manager at the
Ephrata Community Hospital and after retirement she volunteered at the
hospital.
Born in Hamburg, Berks County, she was the daughter of
the late John A. and Sadie Royer Bender.
She was an active member
of the Conestoga Church of the Brethren, Leola, where she served on
various commissions and the Stephen Ministry. Anna was chair of the Leola
Committee of the Fresh Air Fund for many years. She enjoyed reading,
crocheting, bird watching from her home along the Conestoga River, her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Over the years, Anna and her
husband opened their home for two foster children and many Fresh Air Fund
children.
She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca S., Lititz; and
Leah A., wife of Jay Wenger, Akron; a son, J. Sidlow, husband of June
Burkholder Achenbach, Ephrata; eight grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband; a
daughter, Sally Jo Achenbach, a sister, Helen Grube, and two brothers,
Russell and Roy Bender.
Interment in Bareville Cemetery, West Earl
Twp., will be private at the convenience of the family.
