‘Chip timing’ newest feature for Firecracker

By on July 2, 2013

A year ago, a record field of more than 900 runners competed in stifling heat for the 35th edition of the Ephrata Firecracker Run.

And while this year’s field figures to be a bit smaller (as of June 21 there were 300 runners pre-registered), there is plenty of anticipation for the 36th Firecracker, which is set for Thursday morning with an 8:30 a.m. start adjacent to Ephrata High School.

New to the race this year will be the use of "chip timing," which had never been used before.

Last year, East Petersburg’s Matt Bailey captured his first Firecracker crown, crossing the finish line first in a time of 26:35.89. Bailey finished well ahead of former champions Justin Krebs (27:14.74) and Darryl Weaver (27:21.00), who took second and third respectively.

On the women’s side, Kathleen Jobes earned her fifth Firecracker title, placing ninth overall with a time of 29:20.33. She finished almost two minutes ahead of second female, Erica Pearson, who was the runner-up with a time of 31:10.84.

Jolene Collins took third with a time of 31:35.23.

Registration for this year’s Firecracker can be done online at: pretzelcitysports.com or active.com or printed race forms can be obtained at the Ephrata Rec Center. Race day registration will be held from 6:30 to 8 a.m. at War Memorial Field. A two-mile fun run will be held at 9:45 a.m. while awards for the five-mile run are being held.

Complete race results will be published in the July 10 edition of The Ephrata Review.
