Cocalico trio set for States

By on March 12, 2014

To have a chance to win a medal, Cocalico Swim Coach Matt Woods has a simple plan for his three swimmers who will compete in the PIAA State Championships at Bucknell University this Wednesday and Thursday.

The Cocalico swimmers heading to States include (left to right): Morgan Haines, Sam Marino and Sidney Evans.

The Cocalico swimmers heading to States include (left to right): Morgan Haines, Sam Marino and Sidney Evans.

“Swim well in the morning, that’s the plan,” Woods said of juniors Sam Marino and Sidney Evans, along with freshman Morgan Haines. “The girls have to swim well in the morning to give themselves a chance to make it back to finals. If they can be at or slightly below their seed times I think they will be successful. It’s tough to hold that taper, but I’m excited to see what they can do.”

Both Marino and Evans will be making return trips to the Kinney Natatorium at Bucknell. Marino qualified for States for the third-straight year while Evans is back for a second time.

A year ago, Marino earned All-State honors after finishing in 13th place in the 100 back (he also was 25th in the 200 free). She will compete in those same two events and is seeded 11th in the 100 back (57.22) and 17th in the 200 free (1:53.88).

“She has a great chance at medaling, and could in both events,” Woods said of her chances. “Again the key is swimming well in that morning session. If she swims well in prelims I think she’ll be swimming for a medal.”

Evans competed in two events a year ago, finishing 23rd in the 200 I.M. and 29th in the 500 free. She enters this year’s tournament seeded 28th in the 500 free (5:11.25) and 29th in the 200 I.M. (2:09.60).

And while she’s sat out practice last week due to an undisclosed illness, Woods believes the junior could surprise if she is feeling better.

“I think the 500 would be the event she could definitely be a darkhorse in,” he said. “She swam a 5:05 or 5:06 at a Y meet, so she can significantly drop her time for districts. If she can swim a time like that, I think she’ll be swimming at night. But after not swimming all last week, I’m not sure where she will be at.”

While both Marino and Evans are veterans of the State competition, the freshman Haines will be getting her feet wet for the first time as she competes as the 28th seed in the 100 free (53.58) Thursday morning.

Woods said the experience will be good for the ninth grader.

“It’s great that she can see the meet, and even see Sam and Sid compete on Wednesday to prep her for Thursday,” he said. “But Morgan is a competitor, she won’t be happy just to be there. I’m hoping the excitement of the meet brings that 100 time down even more.”

The girls AAA meet begins with preliminaries Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until noon., with consolations and finals on tap from 7:30-9 p.m. Thursday’s prelims are again from 10:30 a.m. to noon with finals set for 8:20=9:50 p.m.

The top eight swimmers in each event will earn medals.
