Eagles fall short vs. Hempfield in semis

The Cocalico boys’ tennis team’s dream of reaching the L-L League Team finals was derailed Monday as Section One champion Hempfield earned a 5-0 victory over the Eagles in the semifinals.

The Black Knights (16-0) advanced to face Section One runner-up Manheim Township in Tuesday’s final which was scheduled for 4 p.m. at Warwick. The Blue Streaks upended Section Two champ Manheim Central 4-1 in Monday’s other semifinal.

In singles play Monday at Hempfield, the host Black Knights went a perfect 3-for-3 as Calvin Athey knocked off Cocalico’s Connor Martin, 6-3, 6-2; Jay Cooke defeated the Eagles’ Greg Lewis, 6-1, 6-3; and Jake Curtin beat Cocalico’s Colby Martin, 6-1, 6-0.

The Black Knights rounded out the sweep with a pair of doubles wins. At number one, the Hempfield tandem of Nick Aksu and Jake Hessinger blanked the Eagles’ Ben Hinkley and Colin Hinkley by a 6-0, 6-0 score. At two, Cocalico’s Jarod Snader and Jared Sumar put up a tough fight but lost to Ben Cooke and Andrew Virtz, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.

Cocalico (13-2) will now await District Three Team play.

While Cocalico competed in the L-L playoffs, Ephrata wrapped up its regular season last Wednesday with a 5-2 loss on the road at McCaskey.

Alex Mantsevich had a hand in both Ephrata victories on the day. In singles, he earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Tyler Trump. and in doubles, he teamed with Keller Martin to claim the number one doubles match with an 8-3 victory over the McCaskey tandem of Trump and Noah Speitel.

With the loss, Ephrata closed out the season at 4-11 overall.

Up next, both Ephrata and Cocalico will compete at the L-L League Flight Tournament, which begins Thursday at various sites around the league.

Conestoga Valley will host the first two rounds of AAA Flight One singles, as well as Flights One, Two and Three doubles.

Manheim Central is the site for Flight Two singles, Warwick hosts Flight Three singles while Flight Four singles are at Ephrata.

Semifinals for all brackets will take place Saturday at Conestoga Valley, and the finals will be back at CV next Monday.

First-round match-ups for local players will include:

Flight Four singles- Ryan McKim, Ephrata vs. No. 4 seed Andy Wang, Conestoga Valley; No. 2 seed Jarod Snader, Cocalico vs. Aaron Stehman, Donegal.

Flight One AAA doubles- No. 4 seed Connor Martin/Colby Martin, Cocalico vs. T. Trump/N. Speitel, McCaskey; No. 7 seed Jay Cooke/Nick Aksu, Hempfield vs. Alex Mantsevich/Keller Martin, Ephrata.

Flight Two doubles (8 Game Pro Set)- Greg Lewis/Colin Hinkley, Cocalico vs. Otto/Aichele, Lancaster Catholic.

Flight Three doubles (8 Game Pro Set)- No. 2 seed Jarod Snader/Jared Sumar, Cocalico, bye.
