Eagles’ Strunk moves on L-L GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS (at Overlook G.C.) Boys Girls

After spending his practice round in and out of the many trees that line the course at Overlook, Cocalico junior Garrett Strunk had one thing on his mind heading into Monday’s L-L League Tournament.
"I needed to keep it in the fairway," Strunk recalled thinking.
Well, for the most part, Strunk did just that. And because of it, he turned in a solid 83 on his scorecard, going 41 on the front nine and 42 on the back.
When the smoke had cleared late Monday afternoon, Strunk’s 83 was good enough to place him in a tie with four other golfers for 19th place overall. More importantly, Strunk was just inside the cutline to qualify for Districts, which are set for Oct. 4-5 at Briarwood East Golf Club in York.
"It went really well," he said of his round Monday. "I was hitting a bunch of fairways and I was hitting a decent amount of greens, and the putting was good too… Everything just kind of fell into place."
And making it to Districts for the first time was the result of that fine play.
"My main goal was to get into Districts," Strunk said. "I mean, honestly, I couldn’t say I was expecting to make it. I knew had to play well to get in, but that was definitely the overall goal. My main goal Monday was to hit fairways because I knew I could score if I did that."
"I was proud (to qualify for Districts)," he continued. "As a junior I thought I did pretty well because it always seems to be the seniors who go. But I was pretty happy with what I did, and I know my family was too."
As for his goals at Districts, Strunk said he’ll try to keep it consistent.
"I never played the course before so I can’t say what I want to do at that course, but I just want to keep everything solid, and be pretty long off the tee," he said. "Overall, I’d just like to try to stay consistent with the way that I’m playing. I’ve been right around the 80 line, so if I can hit some greens, I can usually score."
Strunk was the lone local golfer to keep his season alive and advance.
In addition to Strunk, Ethan Miller was next for the Eagles, finishing in a tie for 44th place with a round of 88. Ed Pooley followed for Cocalico in 63rd place (96), and Brett Kupp rounded out the lineup in 69th place with a score of 100.
Ephrata’s Nick Hatch was low man for the Mounts, finishing in a tie for 31st, three strokes behind Strunk at 86. Teammate Mitchel Storb was next in a tie for 37th with an 87, followed by Anthony Embiscuso (tied for 49th, 90) and Aaron Hubbard (tied for 55th, 92).
And in girls’ competition, Lauren Moyer of Ephrata took eighth place with a 106.
This past week, Section One concluded its regular season play with a tournament held at Overlook on Wednesday.
Ephrata closed out the season with a strong third-place showing (4-2) as the Mounts finished with 332 strokes.
Township closed out a perfect 42-0 season by finishing first with 292 strokes. Hempfield was next at 327, followed by Ephrata, CV (335), Cedar Crest (345), Penn manor (345) and Warwick (359).
Nick Hatch and Mitchel Storb tied for low honors for Ephrata with a pair of 81s. Aaron Hubbard and Anthony Embiscuso rounded out the Mounts’ lineup with a pair of 85s.
Ephrata finished the Section One season with a 19-23 record which placed the Mounts fourth overall.
