Eagles’ tennis opens season with loss to MC
The Cocalico boys tennis team officially kicked off the spring sports season Monday afternoon on the road at Manheim Central.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Barons proved to be not so gracious hosts as Manheim Central earned a 7-0 sweep of Cocalico.
In singles play, the Barons went 4-for-4 as Josh Kaiser knocked off Cocalico number one Zach Weinhold 6-3, 6-3; Colin Wolgemuth downed Drew Weinhold 7-5, 7-5 at two; Jack Rathman edged Cocalico’s Evan Hinckley at three 6-2, 7-6 (7-5); and Chris Good upended Eagle four man Joel Repoley 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles, the Barons completed the team sweep with three wins on the afternoon. Kaiser and Wolgemuth teamed for an 8-4 victory over Zach and Drew Weinhold; the MC team of Good and Gray Good captured an 8-3 decision over Repoley and Ravi Patel; and the Baron tandem of Austin King and JT Krueger captured an 8-3 victory over Cocalico’s Solomon Thorpe and Austin Noll.
Cocalico will return to action Wednesday afternoon when the Eagles travel to Pequea Valley, beginning at 4 p.m. As for Ephrata, the Mounts make their season debut Wednesday as they host Elco for a match, beginning at 4 p.m.
While tennis has already gotten started, the rest of the spring sports teams will see action for the first time either later this week or early next week.
Friday afternoon, a full slate of action is set. The Cocalico baseball team heads to Daniel Boone (4:15 p.m.) for its first action of the new campaign while the Ephrata softball team makes its season debut at Wilson (4:15 p.m.).
Local soccer teams also will start on the road Friday as Ephrata heads to Conestoga Valley (4 p.m.) while Cocalico battles on the turf at Manheim Central (4 p.m.).
Closer to home, defending L-L runner-up Ephrata opens the boys lacrosse season with a home match vs. Palmyra, beginning at 4:15 p.m. Cocalico will also enjoy some home cooking as the Eagles will battle Conrad Weiser at 4:15 p.m.
The Ephrata baseball team opens its 2012 season Saturday at Daniel Boone (11 a.m.) while the Cocalico boys volleyball team heads to Wilson to compete in the Bulldog Tournament.
Track headlines Monday’s action as Ephrata opens at Garden Spot while Cocalico heads to Quarryville to take on Solanco. The Cocalico girls lacrosse squad also opens Monday, traveling to Lampeter-Strasburg for a 4:15 p.m. match. And the Cocalico girls softball squad opens its 2012 play on the road at Conrad Weiser (4:15 p.m.)
Finally, the Ephrata boys volleyball team begins its season next Tuesday evening as the Mounts host McCaskey for a match that begins at 7 p.m. More TENNIS, page B-4
