Ephrata’s Ryan Lefever recently earned his chance to compete at the prestigious Junior War of the Roses Golf Tournament.

A junior-to-be at Ephrata High School, Lefever was a member of the victorious Lancaster squad, which soundly defeated York by a 19 1/2-8 1/2 score held at Regents’ Glen Country Club last Thursday.

Lefever, who was named to the squad after finishing as one of the four highest point earners in the Junior Division of the summer-long Lancaster County Jr. Golf Tour, said it was an honor to be selected to represent Lancaster County.

"I was really excited," Lefever said. "It was a fun experience to meet new people from York. I was able to play with two guys from York and one other guy from Lancaster County so just to meet new people was cool and to hang out with everyone from Lancaster and talk about golf was definitely a good experience."

The Lancaster win was its eighth-straight victory against its York counterpart in the long series.

"I’ll be honest, I had a lot of doubt going into this year’s Junior War of the Roses," LCJGT tournament director Skip Walters said. "We lost a tremendous amount of talent, especially in the senior boys’ division, that graduated this past spring and were ineligible for LCJGT play this summer. But our golfers stepped up and improved their game, and those results were evident on Thursday."

Teaming with Walker Kirk, Lefever said the twosome played well but dropped a pair of tight decisions in both alternate shot and best ball.

Isaiah Logue and Nick Geiman edged the local pair, one-up in nine holes of better ball. The York tandem also downed Lefever and Kirk 1-up in the nine holes of alternate shot.

In the afternoon match play portion of the tournament, Geiman defeated Lefever, 6 and 5.

"I felt I played pretty well, especially the first 18 holes," Lefever said despite the losses. "I feel I played just OK in the second round (of match play)."

Lefever, 16, is hoping to parlay his success this summer to the high school links where he figures to be one of the key players for the Mountaineers in 2011 as a junior.

"I played in one (high school) match last year as a sophomore but I think playing in the (LCJGT Tour) will help me for the season," he said. "It really helped especially because any time you can play competitively with other people it’s a good thing. I also got to meet a lot of new people which was a lot of fun."
