At Union Barrel Works, You’ll feel Like Family

There is a great family atmosphere at Union Barrel Works in Reamstown, where people get together for great brews, great food and great times.

union-barrel-front-buildingSituated in a turn-of-the-century building from the late 1800s and early 1900s, the brick structure was once a hardware store, then a garment factory. The antique bar dates back to the 1800s, and boasts the original tin ceiling and hardwood maple floors.

The brews are what give Union Barrel Works its name. The handcrafted brews include Pilsner, Pale Ale, Hefeweizen, Mai Bock, Wobbly Bob and seasonal Blueberry Wheat. There are also a variety of cocktails and carefully selected wines from a local winery.

The beers pair perfectly with the menu.  At Union Barrel Works, the menu is designed to go with the unfiltered beers, that are brewed for a natural flavor that maintains nutrients. Union Barrel Works brews as many as a dozen different beers. The pale golden Kolsch German ale, the Dortmunder style Lager, the deep golden malty Mai Bock, the Pale Ale with bittering hops, and the Wobbly Bob Doppelbock is rich and malty.

The key to pairing beer and food is to understand the key elements of beer. That includes water, malted barley, hops and yeast. The water gives the beer the essential base. Barley is malted to give beer its color and flavor. Hops add aroma and bitterness. Yeast turns the sugars into alcohol, giving beer its characteristic yeasty flavor. Together, these ingredients are balanced for a variety of beer qualities.

There are choices like pretzels and cheese, crabmeat cheesecake, crab spring rolls, meaty wings and hearty burgers. Try the signature smoked trout chowder or the tender turkey with all the fixings that makes it Thanksgiving any day of the year. Other Union Barrel favorites include the tender prime rib in queen or king cuts, Uncle Fester’s chicken with barbecue sauce, Cobb salad, Pittsburgh salad with steak, elk meat loaf, fish and chips, and the best cheesesteak ever, with prime rib. union-barrel-inside
