Coming soon: Taste of Lititz

Taste of Lititz is a downtown street party for the whole family, celebrating local art, music, food … and beer and wine. Mark your calendars now. Tickets are available at Aaron’s Books, the General Sutter Inn, and Lititz Borough Hall.

The massive growth in popularity of craft beer has prompted vendors, restaurants and brewers to seek new and creative ways to make their products stand out in the crowd. One way to highlight the unique flavors of a beer is to pair it with food. Following in the successful footsteps of wine and whiskey, beer pairings and dinners have become a regular part of the food service and brewing industry.

On Friday, June 2, seekers of libations will be able to create their own pairings at the annual Taste of Lititz event hosted by Venture Lititz. The event presents a taste of everything cool the area has to offer — art, music, food, drinks, and fun.

“It’s really a taste of what makes Lititz great,” said Jim Wenger, event committee member. “This year we are including our civic groups because they also have an impact on what makes our community so great.”

These groups will be running the games, for all ages, like street bowling and paper airplane toss.

But, back to the beer … and wine. And since wine is the foundation for the whole pairing movement let’s start there. The two downtown wine shops, Stargazers Vineyard and Waltz Vineyards, will be offering pours for purchase*. Waltz will offer its Sauvignon Blanc, 2016 Fusion, 2015 Old Line Chardonnay, and 2015 Stiegel Rose.

“All of these wines are served slightly chilled and they are the perfect match for the fresh flavors of summer,” said Kim Waltz, who also let me in on a little secret. Waltz will introduce its 2014 Baron Red at the event. Good news for all you winos out there!

I suggest trying to find a wine to pair with the grilled peach gazpacho with coconut mint crema offered by Chef Anastasio Santos at Gravie Kitchen + Commons. The new eatery will also make a first impression with a Vegetarian Jerk Bite consisting of roasted jerk sweet potatoes and mashed black bean salsa topped with grilled pineapple and a caramelized banana sauce. The Waltz reds will go well with Gravie’s bakery division’s brownie bites and almond shortbread cookies.

As for beer, Bulls Head Public House will keep it “local” with drafts from St. Boniface Craft Brewing Co., York’s Collusion Tapworks, and Stoudt’s Brewing Company. Watch for a potential guest-tapper appearance by the Queen of Hops herself, Carol Stoudt. Rounding out the beer scene will be Appalachian Brewing Company and JoBoy’s Brew Pub.

For those looking for a non-alcoholic pairing, check out Isaac’s Speckled Lemonade brought to pair with their chilled strawberry soup and Pterodactyl Dip.

“(That’s) our version of the classic hoagie dip (with) all the ingredients we use in our Pterodactyl sandwich,” said Isaac’s frontman Johnny Roberts. “The stuff is highly addicting!”

Other food coming to Taste of Lititz includes: Salted Caramel and Honey Roasted Peanut Butter ice cream from Isabella’s; uber-popular bacon pops, which is a big hunk of bacon on a stick, flame grilled and caramelized with brown sugar from Rooster Street Butcher; York County soft pretzel bites and warm crab and bacon dip from Scooter’s; and a soup and sip combo from Spill, tomato bisque and home brewed iced green tea.

*Admission to the Main Street event is $5 for adults, $2 for children under 13, and free for children 3 and under. There will be live entertainment throughout the night, and the games are included with the price of admission. Food and drinks are priced individually on a pay-as-you-go basis.
