Will perform with New Holland Band

Student and seasoned musicians will share the stage in a joint patriotic Memorial Day concert, Monday, May 30, at 6:30 p.m., at the Caernarvon Fire Company, 2145 Main St., Narvon.

This marks the 18th year for the Eastern Lancaster County Elementary Spartan Band to perform in the patriotic Churchtown concert with the renowned New Holland Band.

Sixty-one of the 140 fifth and sixth grade musicians from the Elanco School District’s three elementary schools — Blue Ball Elementary, 24; Brecknock Elementary 17; New Holland Elementary 20 — will perform at the concert.

Both bands perform six pieces together and the New Holland Band plays two alone.

“Performing with the New Holland Band is a fantastic opportunity for young players to play with professional musicians, not only for a great patriotic purpose but also as an excellent music education experience,” said Jen Schoener, Elanco Elementary Schools instrumental band/orchestra teacher.

Schoener directs the Spartan band, along with music teacher Joc Heckman, from Elanco Elementary School.

Schoener said several of the New Holland Band members were in the Elanco Elementary Band years ago. She believes it’s also a great way to introduce the New Holland Band to potential future members.

Ken Laudermilch, New Holland Band music director, agrees.

“The Memorial Day Concert is a wonderful teaching opportunity for youth to honor those who served our nation,” he said. “It also recognizes the importance of youth to the continuance of the New Holland Band.”

Joc Heckman, Elanco elementary school instrumental teacher for band/orchestra, also directs the Spartan band.
