baby1 baby2While the area’s first baby of 2014 arrived and was all warm and snuggly at Ephrata Community Hospital Jan. 1, less than a week later residents were dealing with days of record-breaking and near-record breaking cold temperatures. (Left) Baby Samuel F. Lapp made a “big” entrance into the world last Wednesday, weighing in at 11 pounds, 1 ounce and measuring 23 inches long. The dark-haired baby with a big smile was the first child for Ben and Elizabeth Lapp of Kirkwood. Some areas of the county saw temperatures dip to minus-3 Tuesday, with wind chills reaching as low as minus-20. This marked the second time in four days, the thermometer dipped below zero, as a “polar vortex” was cited as the cause for the extreme frigid conditions.
