Canines have their day at the Ephrata Pool

It was a perfect day for a swim, and for the seventh year in a row, Ephrata area canine citizens had their annual day in the water. Ephrata Rec Center Executive Director Jim Summers said the 2019 event drew 168 dogs, along with their humans, to the pool the Saturday after Labor Day.

Summers said the dogs were, as usual, frisky but well-behaved. The dogs had fun, the people had fun and everybody went home soaked and happy.

Bailey, left, and a nameless buddy paddle ashore with treasures rescued from the sea. Bailey’s humans are Cindy and Les Martzall. Les is a photographer whose pictures often grace the pages of the Review.

Sophia Perales cuddles Suzy, who was a shivering five-and-a-half pound of maltiyorky-poo.

Lolo the Jack, and Lucy the balck lab, came for doggie swim day with Juan Pastrana, with whom they share a home.

A couple of toy poodles named Gizmo and Lsela brought their humans Evy and Aaron Benson to the pool for doggie swim day. Gizmo – or maybe it was Isela – turned Aaron into a kayak.

Pippi, a two-and-a-half year old yellow lab brought his humans, Rebecca and Paul Nasados, to doggie swim day just so he could jump up and catch a mouthful of water from an overhead coconut shell that kept overflowing. Pippi did this again, and again, and again, and…

While it is a fundraiser, Summers said he views the annual swim as an event that fits into the Rec Center’s mission of providing wholesome recreation for the community.

Plus it’s a lot of fun.
