One hundred years ago, a downtown Ephrata landmark was built. The Sprecher building, as it is still referred to by many in the community, housed a thriving hardware business for three generations. Sprecher’s Hardware Store closed about a decade ago, but the memories this building holds and the role it played in downtown’s growth remains alive and venerated.

Though the business has actually been operating from that site since 1868, a major renovation and expansion took place in 1911.

On Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Sprecher building’s centennial birthday will be marked, thanks to the sponsorship of a new generation of retailer, the building’s new owner and occupant, The Fun-est Toy Store Ever.

A variety of activities have been planned. The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley will highlight the building’s history through the exhibition of period photographs, artifacts from the hardware store and a collection of antique toys — ironically, the Sprecher family also operated a toy store, located on the second floor, for many years.

The exhibits will be located on the second floor. Visitors can either take the stairs or ride in one of the oldest elevators in Lancaster County.

Since no birthday party is complete without cake, well-wishers will be able to partake in a sweet nosh throughout the day.
