Alvin F. Martzall, 94, decorated WWII vet, contractor, Bee Tree camp cook, enjoyed farming

Alvin F. Martzall, 94, of Manheim, and formerly of Akron, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, at Pleasant View Retirement Community in Manheim.

He was the loving husband of the late Elizabeth “Betty” J. (Sheaffer) Martzall, who passed away on April 4, 2005. Alvin was born in East Cocalico Township on March 1, 1923, a son of the late Samuel M. and Stella (Fisher) Martzall.

Alvin served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater and was awarded two Bronze Battle Stars. He worked as a plasterer and carpenter with Ivan Eberly and George Stief Contractors for 22 years and then with his brother Ellis Martzall for 18 years. Alvin was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Denver for more than 50 years.

He enjoyed farming, gardening, playing cards, reading, hunting, spending time at the mountains, and was also a member of the Bee Tree Hunting Club in Lycoming. After he gave up hunting, Alvin stayed on at Bee Tree as camp cook.

Alvin is survived by two children: Brenda L., wife of John E. Sheaffer, of Lancaster; and Dennis A. Martzall, husband of P. Kristin (Gravenor) Martzall, of Akron; two grandchildren: Abby K. (Martzall) Nelson, wife of Timothy J. Nelson. of Lake Wynonah; and Daniel A. Martzall, husband of Denise (LeGrand) Martzall, of Christiana; four great-grandchildren: Elly, Jonah, Hannah, and Adeline. Also surviving is his brother: Harlan F. Martzall (Dorothy) of Adamstown.

In addition to his wife and parents, Alvin was preceded in death by two brothers: Ellis F. and Chester F. Martzall; and one sister: Kathryn Stahley.

Funeral services were held at Gravenor Home for Funerals, Ephrata, on Sept. 20, with the Rev. Brad Haws officiating. Interment with Military Honors was held at Fairview Cemetery Annex in Denver.
