Betty Jane Wiersma, 88, Ephrata Manor gift shop volunteer, avid bowler and pinochle player

Betty Jane Wiersma, 88, of Lititz, born Oct. 6, 1927, passed away after a short illness on May 24, 2016, at Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy, surrounded by her loving family.

She was a caring, devoted, and generous person to many friends and family alike. She enjoyed bowling for more than 60 years and most recently bowling duck pins at the Lancaster Elks. She regularly played pinochle with a group called the Happy Six.

For more than 20 years, she was a dedicated and committed volunteer in the gift shop at the Ephrata Manor interacting with their numerous residents. She had been a very active member of St. Andrew’s United Church of Christ; and later in life she was a regular attendee at Bethany United Church of Christ, and Zion’s Reformed United Church of Christ, all in Ephrata. She dedicated more than 40 years to serving the weekly Men’s Wash Day Club at the Lancaster Hamilton Club. In addition Betty was a selfless volunteer to her many friends throughout her life.

She also served the community by donating in excess of 50 gallons of blood to the Lancaster blood bank during her lifetime. Betty will be dearly missed by those who knew her best. Her forthright manner and honest integrity were the hallmark of a life lived well.

She is survived by her husband: William Wiersma of 35 years. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son: David J. Miller, husband of Cynthia C. Miller, of Wilmington, Del.; granddaughter: Chelsea Miller of Mount Joy; her daughter: Deborah J. Myers, wife of James Myers, of Mooresville, N.C.; grandsons: Justin Myers; and Nathan Myers, husband of Theresa Myers, all of Raleigh, N.C.; and great-grandson: Alex Myers. She is also survived by five brothers: Jim, husband of Jean Miller; Rick, husband of Sandra “Sam” Miller; Vaughn Miller, companion of Vicki Lowe; Sidney Miller; Garry Miller, all of Manheim; three sisters: Nancy, wife of Bill Shenberger; Rosalie Miller; Carol, wife of Nevin Garner, all of Manheim.

Preceding her in death are four brothers: Jere, Jack, Terry Lee, and Dougie Miller.

Services were held May 27 at Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home and Crematory, Lititz. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Flowers are welcome.
