Charles M. Messner, 77, formerly of Adamstown, baseball star, CHS grad, USPS retiree

Charles M. Messner, 77, of Country Meadows Assisted Living, Wyomissing, passed away Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016, at Reading Hospital and Medical Center.

He was born in Hinkletown to the late Edwin and Katie Viola (Kachel) Messner, was raised in Adamstown, and also resided in Reading and Muhlenberg Township. Charles was the husband of Joyce (Morris) Messner, with whom he shared 44 years of marriage.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy (Messner) Buck.

Charles was a former member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Adamstown. Later he was a member of Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Reading. He was a graduate of Cocalico Union High School, Class of 1957. Charles played varsity baseball in high school, and played in the American Legion Junior All-Star Game in Connie Mack Stadium, for which he received the Most Courageous Athlete Award. Charles was retired following many years of employment with the United States Postal Service. Charles was a loving husband, devoted to the care of his wife, who is afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by a brother-in-law: Sidney Buck; four nieces: Jill (Buck) Henderson and children, Jordan and Tyler; Janelle (Buck), wife of Chadd Brewer, and children, Tony and Destiny; Kathy O’Neill, wife of Kenneth Lyons, and step-daughters, Janney and Gillian; and Terry (O’Neill), wife of Richard Plinke, and sons, Charles, Patrick, and Daniel.

Services took place Feb. 19 at Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, Denver, with Pastor Sandra Gideon officiating. Interment was in the Bergstrasse Lutheran Cemetery.
