Clarence Hufford, EUSD board, active in Akron

Clarence E. Hufford, 93, of Lititz, passed away Sunday, July 3, 2011 at Luther Acres.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Jacob B. and Estelle (Witwer) Hufford. He was the husband of Verna V. (Harnish) Hufford. They had been married 73 years.

Clarence retired as plant superintendent at Miller Hess Shoe Company in 1983 after 46 years of employment. He was a kind and soft-spoken man.

Clarence was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Akron where he had served on the building committee, the church council and was a Sunday school teacher.

Clarence was the first Akron board member of the Ephrata Union School District and served on the school board for 16 years. An Akron Lion since 1948, he was awarded the Melvin Jones award. He was a Boy Scout committee charter member in Akron and he also volunteered with Meals on Wheels. An Akron volunteer fireman, he was also the borough janitor at the Akron Fire Hall. A member of the Garden Spot Camping Club, he enjoyed RVing and photography.

In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters: Dawn H. White, of Wallingford, Vt.; and Janet E., wife of Barry C. Burkholder, of Wilmington, N.C.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother: J. Bruce Hufford, of Columbus, Miss.

He was preceded in death by two sisters: Loretta Wikerd and Pauline Stoltzfus.

A memorial service will be held at noon July 9 at the Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Matthew J. Lenahan officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Clarence’s memory may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, 435 Main St., Akron, PA 17501.
