Deaths of Local Interest – Feb. 25, 2015

Sherman H. Book, 82, of Lititz, formerly of Leola, passed away Feb. 19 at the Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy Center. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952-1956 during the Korean Conflict. He was a high school guidance counselor for Ephrata School District and Conestoga Valley School District. He was an Eagle Scout, an avid bridge player, enjoyed weaving Nantucket baskets, wood turning and rug braiding. Sherman was a lifelong recreational camper from tents to motorhomes.

Gloria Jean Engle, 71, of Lititz passed away Feb. 16. Gloria previously worked for Fulton Bank in Lancaster and was the secretary and bookkeeper for Buddies Pro Shop Inc. She enjoyed the time she shared with her family and loved her grandchildren dearly. Her son, Michael Forry, husband of Sharon, lives in Reinholds.

Grace P. Lehman Fry, 84, of Lititz, died Feb. 20, at Heart of Lancaster following a brief illness. A faithful follower of Jesus Christ, Grace was a member of Mount Hope Mennonite Church in Manheim. She was an avid gardener her entire life and preserved much of what she grew for her family’s enjoyment. She was also an excellent cook and baker. Her sister, Martha, wife of Martin Zimmerman, lives in Ephrata.

Harry Dale Hotchkiss, 72, of Lancaster, went home to rest Feb. 14. His daughter, Melissa L., wife of Scott Harman, lives in Denver.

Janet M. Martin, 59, of Morgantown, died unexpectedly at her home Feb. 18. Janet was a homemaker and attended Petra Church in New Holland. She enjoyed reading, word search, playing Scrabble, yard sales, and camping. Her daughter, Julie, married to Todd Weber, resides in Adamstown.

Carl A. Mowery, 85, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully Feb. 14. He proudly served as a member of the U.S. Army and was a life member of Riverside Camping Association, a member of VFW Post 1690 and AmVets Post 19. He retired from Lancaster City. His son, Michael J., husband of Kimberly, lives in Ephrata.

Roger Carl Patterson, 53, of Marcellus, Mich., passed away Feb. 17. He was a loving family man and an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting. He enjoyed watching football as a big U of M fan. Roger was employed by Zoetis, originally Pfizer, Pharmacia & Upjohn and Upjohn, for the last 30 years. His daughters, Lauren and Kristin Patterson, live in Ephrata.
