Dennis L. ‘Sarge’ Gehr, 70, EHS grad, Air Force audiovisual media tech, outdoorsman, John Wayne fan

MSgt. Dennis L. “Sarge” Gehr, USAF Ret., 70, of Ephrata, passed away Friday, Nov. 24, 2017, at home after a brief illness.

Dennis was born in Lancaster on Aug. 26, 1947, to the late William Miller Gehr and Ann Smith Rote.

He graduated from Ephrata High School in 1965 and was a career military service member having served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force for over 20 years. He was a crew member aboard the U.S.S. Forrestal from 1966 to 1968. He mostly worked as an audiovisual media technician with the Air Force Orientation Group. After having served his country for over 20 years, he was employed with Berk Tech, Industries for 20 years.

He was a member of the Ephrata VFW, AmVets, and American Legion; the Reamstown and Newmanstown Athletic Associations; and Camp Sequoia in Juniata County. He was also an alumnus of AFOG. A movie lover, Dennis was especially a fan of John Wayne. He also loved Christmas time, woodworking, camping and fishing.

Dennis is survived by his daughter: Deneen Wolfe, wife of Jason Wolfe of Scott City, Kansas; five grandchildren: Cole Gerlach; Camren, Christian, Anthony, and Celeste Wolfe; and six siblings: Sharon, Katheran, Jackie, and Barry Gehr; and Nathan and Jared Levitan; and a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Dennis was preceded in death by his son: William Michael Gehr; foster mother: Luella McElhenney; sister: Shirley Gehr; and a brother: Ronald Levitan.

Friends will be received at Gravenor Home for Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, on Friday, Dec. 1, from 11 a.m. to noon. Funeral services, officiated by Barry Gehr, will begin at noon and will be followed by interment with full military honors at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
